Simple ways to show off your Irish heritage

Few things matter more than our identity. This core aspect informs every decision we to how dress to how we interact with others. There are so many aspects that make up our identity and one of the most important aspects is our heritage.

Many cultures have multiple ways of expressing their heritage, and the Irish are no exception. If you’re uncertain of how to express your Irish heritage, however, we are here to help!

Here are some simple ways to proudly show off your Irish heritage:

Use Celtic Greetings

This is something simple that you can do to incorporate into your everyday life. In the same way that some people may say ‘bonjour’, or ‘ciao’, you incorporate the Irish word for hello – “Dia Duit”.  You don’t have to greet everyone in this way, but you can drop it casually from time to time as a way of expressing your heritage. You may find people asking what you’ve said and what it means – this is a chance for you to explore your heritage further!

Hang a Coat of Arms in your Home

If you have a wall that looks a bit empty, why not hang an Irish coat of arms? If you have an Irish surname (a quick google can confirm this for you) or perhaps an Irish family name that you no longer use, you’ll be able to find a coat of arms online. Simply, select a design or print that fits with your taste and you’re in business! You’ll of course need a frame, so make sure to choose one that matches your current decor – you can even find Celtic inspired frames! Alternatively, you can choose a family shield that better suits your style.

This coat of arms is a great way to express your families history with pride, and invite your guests to ask more questions about your background.

Wear Irish Clothing and Jewelry

We aren’t saying that you need to wear a shirt that says ‘I’m Irish’. You can, however, wear clothes that express your heritage. There are items like a traditional Aran sweater, made from Irish Merino wool. These sweaters were once knitted by the wives of fishermen on the island of Aran. If they can keep fishermen at sea warm, they can certainly help take the edge off any winter chill. These come in both men’s and women’s styles. There are also scarves, ponchos, and headwear, like Irish designed flat caps.

Alternatively, you could wear a Celtic inspired piece of Jewelry. There are so many designs you can choose from, including various rings, necklaces, bracelets, earrings, and more!
